Fruit Tile

Nature has played an important role in the training of an architect/artist from since the early Renaissance.  In a lesson about color, texture, geometry and structure; we each chose a tropical fruit and used it to conduct and produce several studies, culminating into a tile design.  Naturally, my choice of fruit was the mango.

Pencil Sketches

I began this project with a number of pencil drawings.  Perspective, plan, elevation, and sections of the mango were used to produce these studies.

Color Studies

Next, color studies were prepared to draw a still life of the chosen fruit.  Monochrome, complimentary, split complementary, and analogous color scheme studies were prepared to help me choose colors for the still life.

Still Life

I took a very abstract approach towards the composition of the still life and imagined the mango floating in the sea at split eye level.

Finally, as an ode to my still life, I designed the tile as mangoes arranged in a flower formation (mimicking the beginning stage of a mango) floating in the waves of water.
