Habitat for Humanity

I save some room in my free time to volunteer with the Habitat for Humanity Greater Miami Chapter. Recognizing my position in life, I personally believe that it is my duty to help and give to others that may not be as fortunate. I participate in builds throughout the year of homes for those on the Habitat for Humanity wait list. Not only am I helping others, but I also learn a lot more about construction principles and methods, even when I think I have seen it all!

Florida Baptist Children's Home

Florida Baptist Children's Home is a Christian children's service center in Miami, FL.  Beginning as an orphanage, Florida Baptist Children''s Home now provides shelter to kids in need and services to families in need.  This year, APX chose this children's home for our annual philanthropy project.  We completely demolished and redid 2 dilapidated wood decks on the property.

His House Children’s Home

His House is home to hundreds of kids in Miami who were either abused, impoverished, orphaned, or fled from their war-torn home foreign countries.  My professional fraternity, Alpha Rho Chi (APX), decided to build a pergola in their vegetable garden for our philanthropy project.  His House had previously gotten a couple donors to donate the pavers to build the patio in the garden in 2012, but there was no structure for shade so it wasn’t quite a comfortable place. Being architecture students, we designed the plans for the pergola and decided to build it, as well, getting the supplies from a number of donors.  Over the course of 4 days and all members working together, we completed the structure.

We used cedar wood and cement in the foundation so that the pergola would be structurally sound.
